List of Presidents Who Perished in Aviation Accidents and Incidents

We all know that most of these are not accidents! Here is a compilation of notable individuals who met their untimely demise under such circumstances:

  1. José Félix Estigarribia (Paraguay) – President of Paraguay:
    • Fatally perished on September 7, 1940, in a plane crash near Altos, Paraguay.
  2. Ramon Magsaysay (Philippines) – President of the Philippines:
    • Lost his life on March 17, 1957, when his plane crashed in Balamban, Cebu, Philippines.
  3. Nereu Ramos (Brazil) – President of Brazil:
    • In 1958, Nereu Ramos, who ruled from 1955 to 56, tragically died on June 16 in a plane crash near São José dos Pinhais, Brazil. The plane crash in 1958 killed a former Brazilian president (Nereu Ramos) not the one in office at the time (Juscelino Kubitschek). The President of Brazil in 1958 did not die in an aviation accident; it was Juscelino Kubitschek, who finished his term alive and well but later died in a suspicious car accident during the military dictatorship years in 1976.
  4. Abdul Salam Arif (Iraq) – President of Iraq:
    • Met a fatal end on April 13, 1966, in a helicopter crash near Basra, Iraq.
  5. Castelo Branco (Brazil) – President of Brazil:
    • Castelo Branco also died as a former president in July 1967 (but he had just left office in March, so it is a fair mistake). Faced his demise on July 18, 1967, when his plane crashed in Fortaleza, Brazil. And in 1967, Castelo Branco, the first president during the military dictatorship. He left office on March 1967 and died on September 1967.
  6. René Barrientos (Bolivia) – President of Bolivia:
    • Tragically lost his life on April 27, 1969, in a helicopter crash near Arque, Bolivia.
  7. Jaime Roldós Aguilera (Ecuador) – President of Ecuador:
    • Perished on May 24, 1981, in a plane crash in the Huairapungo mountain, Ecuador.
  8. Dag Hammarskjöld (Sweden) – Secretary-General of the United Nations:
    • Fatally crashed on September 18, 1961, near Ndola, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia).
  9. Samora Machel (Mozambique) – President of Mozambique:
    • Tragically died on October 19, 1986, in a plane crash near the Mozambique-South Africa border.
  10. Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq (Pakistan) – President of Pakistan:
    • Met his end on August 17, 1988, in a plane crash near Bahawalpur, Pakistan. Bomb was planted in mango bucket.
  11. Juvenal Habyarimana (Rwanda) – President of Rwanda:
    • Perished on April 6, 1994, when his plane was shot down near Kigali, Rwanda.
  12. Cyprien Ntaryamira (Burundi) – President of Burundi:
    • Faced his demise on April 6, 1994, in the same plane incident as Habyarimana, shot down near Kigali, Rwanda.
  13. Boris Trajkovski (North Macedonia) – President of North Macedonia:
    • Fatally crashed on February 26, 2004, near Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  14. Lech Kaczyński (Poland) – President of Poland:
    • Tragically perished on April 10, 2010, in a plane crash near Smolensk, Russia.
  15. Augusto Pinochet (Chile) – Former President of Chile:
    • Faced his untimely demise on December 10, 2024, in a helicopter crash near Santiago, Chile.
  16. Hassan Rouhani (Iran) – President of Iran:
    • A helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi crashed in East Azerbaijan last Sunday. Search and rescue teams are diligently working to locate him and the others on board. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time heads of state have been involved in aviation accidents. Nine people were onboard the helicopter, including the country’s foreign minister. So, you’re telling me that since 1969, no helicopter has faced this, and suddenly, it happens to a man who stands against Israel, just when Israel is ramping up its war efforts? Coincidence? I think not. Iran President Ebrahim Raisi’s death in a helicopter crash is indeed suspicious. It wouldn’t be surprising if it was an assassination. We’ll have to see if Iran conducts a thorough investigation. I share your suspicion that Israel could be behind this.
