Primary Energy vs Electricity Generation: Why the Difference Matters

Electricity is only part of the energy system. Here is why confusing primary energy, electricity and capacity can distort energy-transition claims.

Renewable Electricity Changes the Conversion Chain

Now compare the thermal plant with a wind turbine.

Moving air already possesses kinetic energy.

The rotor extracts part of that kinetic energy and converts it into mechanical rotation, which is then converted into electricity.

Or consider photovoltaics.

A photovoltaic cell converts incident solar radiation directly into electrical energy without first producing steam and rotating a conventional thermal turbine.

This is one reason comparisons between primary-energy statistics can become surprisingly complicated as energy systems transition from combustion technologies toward renewables.

Different technologies have fundamentally different conversion chains.

Why This Matters When Someone Says “86% Fossil Fuels”

One of the figures introduced in the course material is that fossil fuels account for a very large share of global energy use, while their share in electricity generation is substantially lower.

That difference is not a mathematical mistake.

It reflects the fact that electricity represents only part of total energy consumption.

Oil is the obvious example.

Petroleum products have historically been enormously important to transportation. Cars, trucks, ships and aircraft can consume vast quantities of petroleum without that petroleum ever being used to generate electricity.

Natural gas can similarly be burned directly for industrial processes and heating.

Coal can serve both electricity generation and industrial applications.

So a country’s electricity mix cannot automatically be used as a proxy for its entire energy mix.

This is exactly where public discussions can go wrong.
