There is a serious question about the political climate in which Indian Muslim artists work. Public hostility towards Muslims, pressure on cultural figures, and the calculation involved in taking political positions warrant scrutiny. But there is no verified basis to say that BJP or RSS supporters threatened to kill stars for attending Khan’s funeral, or that such fear caused their absence. Presenting that explanation as fact would let the absent stars escape the question Murad actually asked: why was an artist’s last journey apparently less urgent to them than the industry events for which time is routinely found? The same discipline applies when assessing politically charged entertainment claims elsewhere; as I argued in the Tabish Hashmi case, a plausible suspicion is still different from evidence of a particular cause. A reported will, and a debate that lost sight of the man
A report published before the funeral said Khan’s wife had given a document to Imam Muhammad Owais of Mumbai’s Bilal Mosque to read. According to that account, Khan had provided for three daughters, left other property to his wife and two sons, and designated one kanal of land for a mosque. It also reported that his eldest son intended to pay for construction. The report attributes its account to Muslim Media India; a copy of the will, property records and confirmation that construction has begun have not been independently established here.
