I Loathe Tabish Hashmi’s Comedy—But There Is Still No Proof Geo Punished Him for Kashmir

I dislike Tabish Hashmi’s comedy, but evidence still does not prove Geo removed him over Kashmir. Here is what the public record actually shows today.

Tabish Hashmi seated on a darkened comedy talk-show set after announcing his departure from Hasna Mana Hai.

Do Not Rewrite a Weak Television Format as a National Sacrifice

Hashmi’s supporters are entitled to miss him. He had an audience, a recognisable Karachi delivery and sufficient screen presence to carry a long-running programme. Those are legitimate professional achievements.

However, success does not immunise a show from criticism.

Hasna Mana Hai increasingly represented the safest and laziest instinct of Pakistani commercial television: invite a celebrity, construct awkward situations, insert suggestive remarks, manufacture exaggerated laughter, cut the episode into viral clips and repeat the formula until the audience stops noticing that nothing is evolving. The machinery may generate views, but view counts alone do not turn repetition into cultural importance.

Pakistan does not suffer from an absence of humorous people. It suffers from broadcasters who frequently underestimate the intelligence of Pakistani viewers. The deeper crisis resembles the production problem discussed in why Pakistani content struggles to compete internationally: broadcasters confuse familiarity with quality, television ratings with creative achievement and controversy with originality.

India’s comedy ecosystem is hardly immune from vulgarity, imitation or mediocrity, but its larger platforms continually experiment with stand-up specials, sketch formats, satire, streaming productions, fictional comedy and regional-language programming. Pakistan keeps rotating the same guests through slightly rearranged sofas while congratulating itself for innovation.

That is not Tabish Hashmi’s failure alone. It is a system failure involving writers, producers, channel executives, advertisers and an industry that routinely rewards the least risky version of whatever performed well last year.

Kashmir Must Not Become a Convenient Prop for Either Camp

The Kashmir discussion deserves considerably more seriousness than this celebrity controversy is receiving. Hashmi’s video did not present a revolutionary political programme, reveal classified wrongdoing or launch an ideological confrontation with the Pakistani state. It was principally an appeal for dialogue and an expression of sadness over violence involving fellow Pakistanis.

The ongoing debate surrounding protests, state authority and political mobilisation in Azad Jammu and Kashmir requires evidence, context and recognition of local grievances. It cannot be responsibly reduced to “speak for Kashmir and lose your job,” just as it cannot be dismissed by pretending that professional retaliation never occurs in Pakistan. The wider political questions are examined more directly in this analysis of the Jammu Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee, protest escalation and dialogue.

Pakistanis should defend the right to raise questions about Kashmir without converting every unconfirmed career development into proof of state repression. Otherwise, genuine cases of coercion become harder to establish because the public has already been trained to treat speculation as documentation.

Freedom of Speech Is Bigger Than Whether We Like the Speaker

Here is the principle that must survive personal dislike: nobody should lose a lawful livelihood merely for requesting dialogue, condemning violence or questioning the handling of a public crisis.

Article 19 of Pakistan’s Constitution recognises every citizen’s right to freedom of speech and expression, although it also permits reasonable restrictions established by law in specified areas, including security, public order, decency and incitement. The right is therefore protected but not absolute.

That constitutional protection does not depend upon whether the speaker is refined, vulgar, conservative, liberal, talented or irritating. Rights become meaningless when people defend them only for personalities they admire.

However, constitutional seriousness works in both directions. We must not tolerate unlawful retaliation, but we must also refuse to fabricate retaliation without proof. A freedom-of-expression argument built upon an unsupported factual claim ultimately damages the very cause it claims to defend.

I can dislike Hashmi’s comedy and still say that punishing him for peaceful political expression would be unacceptable. I can also defend that principle while stating that no reliable public evidence currently proves such punishment occurred.

Both positions can be true at once. Adults should be capable of holding them.
