U.S. Ready to Fund Another Massive Mining Project in Pakistan

Washington is ready to finance another Reko Diq-sized mine in Pakistan, but local processing and Balochistan’s fair share will determine its legacy.

Balochistan Cannot Remain a Footnote

Every glossy discussion about critical minerals eventually arrives at the same uncomfortable place: much of the resource potential lies in Balochistan, while many communities in the province still experience inadequate water, electricity, roads, healthcare and employment.

That contradiction cannot be managed indefinitely through press releases. If projects worth billions of dollars rise from Balochistan’s soil while neighbouring districts remain visibly excluded from their prosperity, resentment will not be an external fabrication; it will be the foreseeable result of poor economic design.

A credible mining compact should therefore include transparent provincial revenue flows, district-level development allocations, technical institutes for local residents, independently monitored environmental standards and published procurement targets. Security is not created exclusively through checkpoints. Long-term security emerges when the population can identify a legitimate personal and collective stake in the project’s success.

American firms may be willing to accept security risk, but Pakistan should be more concerned with reducing that risk through fair participation than celebrating investors for tolerating it.

From Mine Mouth to Manufacturing

Copper is fundamental to transmission networks, solar installations, electric vehicles, industrial motors and data centres. Antimony is used in flame retardants, alloys, batteries and defence applications, while tungsten is valued for its exceptional hardness and heat resistance. These are not merely export commodities; they are the physical foundations of the next industrial era.

Pakistan should connect its mineral strategy with its power, manufacturing and technology strategies. The mistake would be to treat mining as an isolated department concerned only with licences and royalties. A large mine requires dependable electricity, and an energy-intensive refining industry requires even more. Hybrid energy systems incorporating grid supply, utility-scale solar, storage and carefully engineered backup can lower operating risk while supporting Pakistan’s broader energy transition.

That connection resembles the argument made in my warning that Pakistan must build real AI infrastructure rather than chase superficial technology trends. Sovereignty is not achieved by possessing raw inputs or announcing fashionable projects. It is achieved by developing the infrastructure and technical depth required to convert those inputs into nationally useful capability.

For mining developers, industrial groups and investors evaluating reliable energy for remote or high-load projects, Zorays Solar can support technical consultations, energy audits and hybrid power-system planning suited to Pakistan’s operating conditions. A mine may begin with geology, but its commercial life ultimately depends on engineering, power quality and operational reliability.
