Wise closed a UK entrepreneur’s account holding roughly £500,000 while he was in China, instantly halting payroll, supplier payments and pending payouts. The very fact that a digital‑banking service can pull the rug out from under a business on a single notice should alarm anyone who relies on fast‑moving cross‑border cash.
What the entrepreneur said
The account holder, @sbamz1, posted on X: “lol I just got to China and these criminals @Wise have decided to randomly close my account with nearly half a million GBP in it with pending payouts coming in over the next week. They’ve asked me for invoices all week and I’ve sent them all within 6 hours of being asked…”. This first‑hand claim is the only direct testimony we have of the freeze.
Wise’s own wording
Two screenshots from the Wise mobile app confirm the closure. The first reads, “We’ve closed your account. This is usually because we believe it’s used in a way that goes against our agreements with you.” A follow‑up notice adds, “After reviewing your case we’ve decided to keep your account closed. In order to refund the remaining balance … please provide your bank details.” The language is deliberately vague, offering no concrete breach and no immediate remedy beyond a nebulous appeal.
