Pakistan Approves Rs13 Billion for PTV, but Does the Country Still Need Its State Broadcaster?

Pakistan has approved a Rs13 billion lifeline for PTV. The real question is whether the broadcaster can be rebuilt without political control.

Does Pakistan still need a state broadcaster?

Pakistan needs an independently governed public-service broadcaster for emergency communication, regional programming, national archives, education, sports and verified public information. That does not justify preserving political hiring, editorial control or financial opacity.

Should PTV be privatised?

Commercial operations can be corporatised, partnered or partially privatised, but terrestrial emergency broadcasting, cultural archives and public-interest regional services should remain protected. The correct priority is structural separation, independent governance and transparent accounting.

What should happen to PTV Sports?

PTV Sports should receive separate audited accounts and professional commercial management. Its audience, rights portfolio and revenue should not be obscured inside the broader corporation’s losses.
