A country can generate most of its electricity from clean sources and still remain heavily dependent on fossil fuels.
Another country can rapidly install solar and wind power while oil and gas continue to dominate its wider energy economy.
Neither statement is contradictory.
The confusion begins when we use the words energy and electricity as though they mean the same thing.
They do not.
Electricity is an energy carrier. It is one component of a much larger energy system that also includes fuels used in transportation, industrial heat, buildings, agriculture and other activities.
That distinction sounds elementary. Yet missing it can fundamentally distort how we interpret a country’s energy transition.
Electricity Is Not the Entire Energy System
Think about an ordinary day.
Electricity powers lights, fans, air conditioners, computers, pumps, motors and appliances.
But a car running on petrol is also consuming energy.
Natural gas burned in an industrial furnace is consuming energy.
Diesel burned by a truck is consuming energy.
Gas used for heating or cooking is consuming energy.
Jet fuel powering an aircraft is consuming energy.
All of these belong to the broader energy system even though they may never pass through an electrical socket.
That is why two questions that sound similar can produce very different answers:
Where does our electricity come from?
and:
Where does our energy come from?
The first concerns the electricity-generation mix.
The second concerns the much broader energy economy.
