Samsung’s own engineering history explains that the company moved from geared mechanisms toward lighter linear designs before introducing its Flex Hinge, which lets the display curve into the hinge in a waterdrop shape. Apple’s first attempt did not emerge from an empty laboratory. It entered a market whose materials, suppliers, consumer expectations and engineering weaknesses had already been exposed through Samsung’s years of real-world deployment.
Core claim: Samsung deserves recognition for creating and refining the modern foldable category; Apple deserves scrutiny—and credit—for attempting to make the category feel complete at the ecosystem level.
Both statements can be true without surrendering to brand tribalism.
No, the iPhone Duo is not genuinely crease-free
The most viral claim surrounding the Duo was also the easiest to exaggerate: Samsung made foldables for years and left a crease, while Apple supposedly eliminated it on its first try.
Apple did not eliminate the laws of materials science.
Its launch animation presented an immaculate surface, but physical impressions indicate that the iPhone Duo still has a fold line visible under certain lighting conditions and viewing angles. Apple’s official wording is carefully chosen: the nano-texture finish “minimizes crease visibility.” It does not claim that the crease has ceased to exist.
The difference matters. A minimized crease is a genuine engineering achievement. A nonexistent crease is a marketing fantasy unless independent, long-term testing proves otherwise.
Apple uses a precision hinge that supports the middle of the display, a nano-textured polymer cover layer, glass layers, flexible adhesives and a titanium support plate. The matte finish reduces glare, which also makes surface deformation less visually aggressive. Early examination reported that a crease could still be detected despite being less conspicuous during ordinary use. Notebookcheck’s crease assessment supports that distinction.
There is also a temporal problem with triumphant day-one comparisons. A freshly handled review unit cannot reveal what repeated opening, pocket pressure, temperature change, dust exposure and thousands of folding cycles will do over a year or two. Samsung’s current devices are judged after years of public ownership; Apple’s first foldable is presently being judged under launch-event lighting.
What nobody is telling you: The decisive crease comparison will not occur on a keynote stage. It will occur after six months of ordinary people opening the device dozens of times a day.
Samsung may supply technology, but Apple still designs the product
Another popular rebuttal claims that Apple cannot receive credit because Samsung manufactures foldable display panels or supplies key components.
That argument misunderstands modern technology manufacturing.
A component supplier and a product architect perform different roles. Apple has long sourced screens, memory, sensors and other parts from specialist manufacturers while controlling industrial design, system integration, silicon, software and product requirements. Samsung’s display-manufacturing expertise deserves substantial recognition, particularly if its technology sits inside a rival’s foldable phone. Yet the presence of a Samsung-made panel would not turn the iPhone Duo into a Galaxy Fold any more than a third-party image sensor turns an iPhone into another manufacturer’s camera.
Samsung’s position may actually be stronger than the insult suggests. If it can compete with Apple in finished smartphones while supplying strategically important components to the wider industry, it participates in more than one layer of value creation.
Apple, meanwhile, must prove that its orchestration of those components produces a meaningfully better experience rather than merely an Apple-branded version of an existing form factor.
That is the real competition.
