When a single X post claims that an MG ZS electric vehicle (EV) costs Rs 52.9 lakh more than its petrol sibling, the numbers sound like a headline‑grabbing scandal. Yet the same thread lays out the arithmetic that keeps the story honest: a three‑year ownership horizon still leaves the EV Rs 45.9 lakh deeper in the pocket.
The price gap is not a myth
According to Aneeq Iftikhar’s post on 27 Oct 2026, the MG ZS 1.5 petrol model is priced at Rs 43.99 lakh ex‑factory, while the MG ZS EV Essence commands Rs 96.9 lakh ex‑factory. The simple subtraction yields a Rs 52.9 lakh premium for the electric version. No hidden subsidies, no tax rebates – just raw manufacturer pricing.
Fuel savings versus reality
Iftikhar assumes a daily commute of 30 km, which adds up to 32,850 km over three years. At a fuel efficiency of 11.5 km per litre and a pump price of Rs 377.71 per litre, the petrol car burns roughly 2,856 litres, costing about Rs 10.8 lakh – roughly Rs 33 per kilometre. The EV, on the other hand, draws 17.7 kWh per 100 km. At a home‑charging rate of Rs 65 per unit, that translates to Rs 11.5 per kilometre, or Rs 3.8 lakh for the same distance. The EV therefore saves about Rs 2.3 lakh a year on fuel.
