Pakistan vs India Drone Technology: The Real Race Between Flight Hardware and Exhibition Models

Why Nimbus2K and HiMark-25 Matter More Than Another Long-Range Drone

The most interesting development may not be the much-publicised 3,000-kilometre D-248. It may be Woot Tech’s attempt to build complementary jet-powered systems for suppressing and destroying enemy air defences.

The company describes Nimbus2K as a jet-propelled anti-radiation cruise missile intended for radars and command-and-control centres. Its published sheet gives it a 75-kilogram maximum take-off weight, three-metre wingspan, 2.5-metre fuselage, up to 650 km/h cruising speed, a claimed 100-kilometre communications range, up to 150 minutes of endurance, a ten-kilogram payload and a service ceiling of 10,000 metres.

HiMark-25 TJ occupies a different envelope. Its presented specifications include a three-metre length, 2.5-metre wingspan, 70-kilogram maximum take-off weight, 240 km/h cruising speed, 320 km/h dash speed, 250-kilometre range, 60-minute endurance and 4,500-metre ceiling. The accompanying material emphasises vehicle-mounted rail launchers, rocket-assisted take-off, swarm employment and mission configurations including anti-radiation and bunker-penetrating warheads.

That combination reveals the logic. A slow, long-range delta-wing weapon can pressure fixed infrastructure and force defenders to expend interceptors. A smaller jet-powered weapon can pursue emitting radars or time-sensitive nodes. Swarms and decoys can complicate classification. Electronic warfare, reconnaissance and conventional aviation can exploit whatever gaps emerge.

This is the architecture of suppression of enemy air defences, or SEAD, followed by destruction of enemy air defences, or DEAD. It does not mean Pakistan has publicly demonstrated a mature, networked swarm capable of dismantling any chosen air-defence grid. It means Pakistani industry is visibly working toward the correct mission combination—and that is strategically more meaningful than boasting about a single drone’s maximum brochure range.

India’s HALE Ambition Is Real—but the Propulsion Gap Is Also Real

India should not be caricatured as having no drone industry. It has TAPAS, Archer-NG, the Ghatak-associated technology demonstrator, Nagastra loitering munitions, private-sector systems and substantial institutional capacity distributed among the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Aeronautical Development Establishment, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and private manufacturers.

Archer-NG has reportedly entered flight development, while the Indian Army has received hundreds of Nagastra-1 systems. India is therefore not standing still, and any Pakistani analysis that ignores its procurement scale would become the mirror image of the propaganda it criticises.

The newly circulated Indian HALE concept, however, remains exactly that: a concept representing a desired high-altitude, long-endurance combat aircraft. Reports associate it with a growing all-up weight potentially reaching roughly 6.7–8 tonnes, turboprop propulsion and possible carriage of weapons including the Astra beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile. Yet even Bharat Dynamics’ official Astra description confirms the missile’s own status and characteristics—not its integration with an operational Indian HALE drone.

The engine problem is not a minor procurement detail. A HALE aircraft expected to operate near 40,000 feet, carry sensors and weapons, survive hot-and-high conditions and retain acceptable take-off performance needs a propulsion system designed around the mission. Suggestions that India convert an Ardiden/Shakti or SAFHAL Aneto-derived turboshaft core into a 1,200–1,500 kW turboprop are technically plausible as an industrial pathway, but a turboprop is not created simply by attaching a propeller to a helicopter engine. Reduction gearing, propeller matching, thermal management, altitude derating, vibration, control software, inlet design, reliability and certification all become programme-defining work.

India’s model may therefore represent a serious future requirement, but it does not yet prove that an eight-tonne indigenous HALE aircraft is ready to fly at 40,000 feet carrying Astra missiles. The recurring frustration expressed even by Indian defence followers—“another project on paper” and “should have been done a decade back”—reflects a genuine gap between India’s conceptual ambition and programme delivery.
