What Happened at LPU? Real Student Panic, an Assault Inquiry and a False Airbase Story

What happened at LPU? Students protested an alleged hostel assault, but viral claims about an airbase and Army attackers remain unsupported by police findings.

Students gather near a decommissioned aircraft display during unrest at Lovely Professional University in Punjab

The most frightening part of the Lovely Professional University footage is not an aircraft against an orange sky. It is the possibility that young women felt unsafe in their own hostel while everyone outside raced to announce what had happened before investigators could establish it. Students in Phagwara, Indian Punjab, protested an alleged sexual assault during the night of 26–27 September 2026. The demonstrations escalated into vandalism, fires and a highway blockade. LPU denied that an assault had occurred; Punjab Police registered a case against an unidentified suspect and formed a Special Investigation Team. An allegation under investigation is neither a proven crime nor a licence to dismiss students’ fear. indianexpress.com

That distinction matters in Pakistan as much as it does across the border. We can demand answers about women’s safety at LPU without turning an unidentified complainant into a prop for an India–Pakistan shouting match. We can also reject the reflex that treats every student protest as proof of guilt. The defensible question is direct: what happened in the hostel, what did students report, and can an independent investigation account for the gap between their fear and the university’s denial?

What the investigation had established by 29 September

Police told The Indian Express that an initial examination of the room identified in the allegation had not substantiated a sexual assault. The three students present there denied that an incident had occurred, according to an officer. Yet police registered an FIR against an unidentified person and said they would examine forensic material, CCTV and phone data. The SIT includes police investigators, CCTV specialists and student representatives. Those steps leave the central allegation unresolved, while giving students and the public a way to judge the eventual finding against evidence. indianexpress.com

A sexual assault occurred in a girls’ hostel Students protested the allegation. LPU denied it, and police said their preliminary inquiry had not substantiated it. An FIR and SIT investigation followed.
The image shows an Indian Air Force base on fire Reporting identifies the aircraft as a decommissioned MiG-23UM display on the LPU campus. The image does not establish an attack on an operational airbase.
Men with walkie-talkies prove attackers entered the hostel Police identified the men they questioned as Army personnel who had come to collect an officer’s child; the DIG said they were not intruders.
Named wardens, BJP figures or military personnel arranged assaults The material reviewed here supplies no reliable evidence for those specific accusations.

Context: The table describes the position reported through 29 September 2026. A preliminary finding can change; a social-media accusation cannot become a finding merely through repetition. indianexpress.com
