That qualification does not make the response to the story any less revealing. Some readers proposed a school or hospital. A person can reasonably prefer either kind of charity, and neither suggestion requires hostility to a mosque. Others treated the proposed mosque itself as proof of something sinister about Muslims. Those are different arguments. The first asks how a gift might serve people; the second refuses to recognise Muslim worship as part of a community’s life. A mosque can be a place for prayer, learning and gathering. Its value cannot be dismissed simply because a commenter would have spent someone else’s money differently.
