Pakistan at FIH Hockey World Cup 2026: The New Format Makes Every Pool D Result Matter

Pakistan returns to the FIH Hockey World Cup in 2026. Here is the new format, Pool D equation, fixtures and why every result matters for the Green Shirts.

Pakistan is not travelling to the 2026 Hockey World Cup merely to make up the numbers. A country that has lifted the men’s World Cup more times than any other nation is returning to the tournament after missing the previous edition, and the cruel beauty of the new format is that Pakistan’s campaign against England, Wales and India begins producing consequences before the second stage has even started.

That is the detail many explanations of the 2026 format miss.

Pakistan has been drawn in Men’s Pool D alongside England, India and Wales, according to the official International Hockey Federation draw.  The tournament itself runs from 15 to 30 August 2026 in Belgium and the Netherlands, with Pakistan’s opening phase taking place in the Netherlands.

For Pakistan, a four-time world champion trying to re-establish itself among hockey’s elite, this is therefore not simply another international tournament. It is an examination of whether the Green Shirts can turn a long-awaited World Cup return into the beginning of something considerably bigger.

Pakistan Is Back at the World Cup

The first achievement should not be treated casually: Pakistan qualified.

Pakistan’s route back came through the World Cup Qualifiers in Ismailia, Egypt, where the Green Shirts ultimately secured their place in the 16-team tournament. FIH had established the qualifiers as the final pathway into Belgium and the Netherlands, with Pakistan competing alongside England, Malaysia, Egypt, Japan, Austria, China and the United States in Ismailia.

That matters because Pakistan was absent from the previous men’s World Cup.

For a nation whose hockey history contains four World Cup championships — 1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994 — simply returning cannot be the ultimate ambition. The psychological target has to move from qualification to competitiveness.

And Pool D gives Pakistan almost no room for a sleepy start.

Match Date Pakistan Time
Pakistan vs England 15 August 2026 10:00 PM
Pakistan vs Wales 17 August 2026 3:30 PM
Pakistan vs India 19 August 2026 6:00 PM

The strategic problem is immediately obvious. There is no gentle introduction.

England arrives first. Wales follows in a match Pakistan will naturally identify as an opportunity to collect points. Then comes India, carrying all the sporting pressure and emotional intensity that accompanies Pakistan-India hockey.

But the most important thing to understand is that these three matches cannot be analysed independently.

Under the 2026 competition structure, one of them could effectively be played twice on the league table while physically being played only once.

That changes everything.

The 2026 Hockey World Cup Format Has Changed

Forget the familiar assumption that Pakistan simply needs to survive its first pool and then begin again.

There is no clean reset.

FIH’s published explanation says the 16 countries are initially divided into four pools of four teams. Each team therefore plays three first-stage matches. The top two teams from each original pool progress into a second group phase, while the teams finishing third and fourth enter groups determining positions 9–16.
