That means the first and second-placed teams from Pools A and D form Pool E. The qualifiers from Pools B and C form Pool F.
The basic championship route is therefore:
16 teams → 8 championship contenders → 4 semi-finalists → 2 finalists → World Champion.
But there is a twist.
The Result That Follows Pakistan Into the Second Stage
This may become the defining tactical feature of Pakistan’s campaign.
Once the top two Pool D teams enter the second stage, they do not play one another again. Instead, their original Pool D result against each other is carried forward.
FIH explains that each team plays only the two unfamiliar opponents in its new four-team group, while the result against the team it already encountered in the opening phase counts toward the new group’s ranking.
Consider what that means.
Suppose Pakistan and India both qualify from Pool D.
Their 19 August Pakistan-India result travels with them into Pool E.
Or suppose Pakistan and England advance. The opening Pakistan-England match becomes part of Pakistan’s second-stage equation.
Suddenly, finishing among the top two in Pool D is not enough.
Pakistan needs to care enormously about which other team advances with it and what result Pakistan obtained against that team.
That is where this format becomes fascinating.
Why Pakistan Cannot Simply “Beat Wales and Qualify”
It is tempting to reduce the opening objective to mathematics: defeat Wales, find enough points against England or India, finish in the top two and move forward.
That thinking is incomplete.
Imagine Pakistan defeats Wales and India, while Pakistan and India eventually occupy Pool D’s top two positions. Pakistan could enter the next phase already carrying the benefit of that victory.
Reverse that result and Pakistan could advance while carrying a defeat into the very stage from which semi-final qualification is decided.
