I Built a PSX Trading Risk Calculator Because Knowing What to Buy Is Useless If You Don’t Know How Much to Risk

Calculate PSX share quantity, stop-loss risk, profit targets and trading costs using a Rs. 25,000 example, with transparent research tools on GitHub.

PSX position sizing and stock trading risk calculator by Zorays Khalid showing Rs. 25,000 investment capital, stop-loss and profit targets.

A properly constructed trading plan works in the opposite direction.

First, the investor identifies the market level at which the original investment hypothesis would no longer be credible. That level could be below an established support area, below a recent swing low, or at another technically defensible price.

Only after identifying that level should the investor calculate how many shares the risk budget permits.

If an entry at Rs. 90 requires a meaningful stop-loss at Rs. 82 rather than Rs. 85, the risk per share becomes materially larger. The calculator will therefore permit fewer shares.

Reducing the quantity is generally more defensible than manipulating the stop-loss to justify a larger position.

There is also a limitation that must never disappear behind a polished interface: a stop-loss price is not a guaranteed exit price. Shares may open below the selected level, liquidity may vanish, or price restrictions may interfere with execution. An investor planning to lose Rs. 250 could consequently lose more.

The calculator estimates controlled risk under specified assumptions. It cannot eliminate market risk.

How Profit Targets Should Be Calculated

Much of the excitement around stock trading concerns profit percentages. Investors naturally want to know whether a share can appreciate by 5%, 10% or 20%, but the more meaningful question is whether that potential gain adequately compensates for the possible loss.

In our example, the hypothetical stock is purchased at Rs. 90 with a recovery target of Rs. 100.

The gross percentage appreciation would be approximately 11.11%.

That sounds attractive, but an investor must also account for brokerage charges, applicable taxes and the possibility of never reaching the target.

A reward-to-risk ratio provides a useful comparison between potential outcomes, although it is not a probability of success.

A strategy with average winners twice as large as average losers can theoretically break even with a win rate of roughly one-third before costs. Once fees and taxes are included, the required success rate rises.

A calculator cannot tell us whether a target will be reached. It can tell us whether the proposed reward is sensible relative to the defined risk.

That alone makes it a useful filter against emotionally driven purchases.

Capital Allocation: Why Having Rs. 25,000 Does Not Mean Investing All Rs. 25,000

There is another psychological trap that deserves attention. Investors frequently assume that cash sitting in a brokerage account is wasted unless immediately deployed.

I disagree.

Cash is not evidence of indecision. It represents financial flexibility, particularly when valuations are stretched or a reliable trading setup has not emerged.

For example, an investor with Rs. 25,000 might limit any individual company to 25% of capital, while maintaining a separate risk cap for each trade and an aggregate risk limit across open positions.

The calculator distinguishes these two constraints. A share purchase must remain within the maximum acceptable investment amount and the maximum acceptable planned loss.

These limits measure different risks. A concentration cap helps reduce dependence on one company, while a loss cap helps restrict damage from an individual failed trade.

Neither replaces diversification analysis. Holding several companies in the same sector may still expose an investor to the same economic risks.

Combining Mean Reversion With Momentum Without Following the Crowd

My broader analytical framework considers both valuation-sensitive mean reversion and momentum confirmation.

A stock might be trading significantly below its 20-day or 50-day moving average, suggesting an unusual price deviation. That observation becomes more interesting when RSI begins recovering, selling pressure weakens, and price structure starts improving.

Alternatively, a company with a reasonable valuation might exhibit a sustained upward trend, with its 10-day EMA above the 21-day EMA and a positive Supertrend reading.

These are different market situations. A mean-reversion opportunity may exist before full momentum confirmation, while a trend-following opportunity may emerge after much of the initial price recovery has already occurred.

Blindly demanding every indicator to agree can lead to late entries. Ignoring all confirmation can lead to repeatedly buying falling shares.

The calculator does not settle that analytical conflict. Instead, it provides the same risk discipline regardless of which strategy generates the trade.

This is important because the best-looking analysis can still produce a losing investment. The objective is not to eliminate wrong predictions but to prevent one wrong prediction from causing disproportionate damage.

What Makes My GitHub Research Project Different?

I believe investors should be able to inspect the assumptions behind a financial tool rather than rely exclusively on a mysterious recommendation engine.

The public Zorays Applications repository on GitHub contains the PSX Wealth Creation Agent, a research-oriented Python project that calculates technical indicators and evaluates hypothetical trade-policy scenarios.

Its documented components include moving-average analysis, RSI, Supertrend, mean-reversion research, position-risk calculations and configurable assumptions concerning transaction costs and profit targets.

The project’s command-line trading policy also considers existing committed portfolio risk, estimated slippage and a configurable tax assumption. Its current default research scenario is not identical to the 1% risk example presented in this article. In particular, the repository documents a separate 3%-capital-risk and 7%-gross-target tactical scenario with a minimum net reward-to-risk threshold of approximately 1.618.
