India Won the Women’s Asia Cup, but BCCI Politicised the Trophy Ceremony Once Again

India’s eighth Women’s Asia Cup triumph was overshadowed by a BCCI-directed trophy refusal that turned a sporting ceremony into political theatre.

India’s women conquered Sri Lanka with bat and ball, yet the Board of Control for Cricket in India apparently decided that winning the Asia Cup was not enough; the victory also had to be converted into a carefully staged diplomatic snub against Pakistan.

That distinction matters. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team earned its championship comprehensively, but its refusal to receive the trophy from Asian Cricket Council president Mohsin Naqvi was not a cricketing achievement, an act required by the Laws of Cricket or an unavoidable response to something that occurred during the final. It was a board-directed political gesture performed through athletes at an official regional sporting ceremony.

India won the match. The BCCI politicised the moment.

What Happened in the 2026 Women’s Asia Cup Final?

India defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs at Dubai International Stadium on September 13, 2026, to secure its eighth Women’s Asia Cup title. Shafali Verma struck 68 and Smriti Mandhana scored 59 as India reached 183 for five. Their 129-run opening partnership effectively determined the direction of the final before Sri Lanka began its chase.

Sree Charani then took four wickets for 20 runs, supported by Deepti Sharma, as Sri Lanka was dismissed for 111. These were commanding performances and deserve recognition without qualification. India was the best team in the final and became champion on sporting merit. The match result and major performances were independently reported by Associated Press and detailed in the Indian Express match report.

Trophy presentation India declined the trophy from Naqvi Converted the ceremony into a political dispute

The controversy began after the cricket had finished. India’s players did not receive the trophy or medals from Naqvi, who attended the presentation in his official capacity as ACC president. The team instead celebrated without the silverware while BCCI representatives later distributed medals internally.

Coach Amol Muzumdar said the team stood behind the board’s decision and considered the tournament finished for India as champion. That confirmation is crucial: this was not a spontaneous act by one offended player. It reflected an institutional BCCI position.
