Do freelancers currently earn Pakistan $8 billion annually?
No. That figure is not supported by the latest official ICT-export data. Pakistan recorded $3.812 billion in ICT export remittances during FY2024–25, while technology-freelancer receipts reached $856.3 million during July–March FY2025–26.
Does converting freelance income into rupees strengthen the rupee?
Formal conversion adds foreign currency to the regulated market, but no individual transaction controls the exchange rate. The rupee is influenced by the combined scale of exports, imports, remittances, debt payments, capital flows, reserves and market expectations.
Does holding dollars increase Pakistan’s external debt?
Not by itself. A private individual retaining legitimately earned foreign currency is not the same as Pakistan incurring new external borrowing. Delayed repatriation can, however, postpone the corresponding foreign-exchange inflow into the domestic formal market.
