Pakistan Does Not Have the Luxury of Treating Road Danger as Entertainment
Road fatalities are not abstract numbers placed in an annual report and forgotten. They represent wage earners who never return home, children left with permanent injuries, families paying medical bills they cannot afford and road users punished for somebody else’s need to appear fearless.
The World Health Organization’s Pakistan road-safety country profile forms part of its international monitoring framework for road deaths and non-fatal injuries. Globally, WHO’s 2023 status report estimated approximately 1.19 million road-traffic deaths annually. That scale should destroy the lazy belief that dangerous driving is a private thrill whose consequences concern only the person performing it.
A reckless rider does not accept risk only for himself. He transfers it without consent to the motorcyclist carrying a child, the pedestrian crossing the road, the delivery rider earning a living, the elderly passenger inside a car and the driver who may instinctively swerve into another vehicle to avoid him. This involuntary transfer of risk is precisely why road discipline is a public obligation rather than a matter of personal style.
Pakistan’s Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965 provides the statutory framework governing motor vehicles and road use, although enforcement, amendments and penalties must be checked against the law applicable in the relevant province. Whether a particular incident supports a traffic citation, licence action or a more serious criminal allegation depends upon evidence and consequence. What should never happen is the automatic reduction of visibly deliberate road misconduct to the harmless language of “an unfortunate accident.”
Social Media Did Not Invent Recklessness, but It Can Reward Its Packaging
TikTok and similar platforms did not create reckless drivers. Pakistan had road bullies long before vertical video, hashtags and engagement analytics existed. What algorithmic media changed was the reward structure: foolishness can now be packaged, replayed, shared and converted into attention within hours.
The logic of short-form distribution is brutally simple. Content is tested with viewers, and observable behaviour—watch time, replays, comments, shares and follows—helps determine whether it reaches a larger audience. An outrageous traffic manoeuvre can consequently receive more distribution precisely because it shocks people into watching again or forwarding it. The platform reads engagement; it does not experience the danger faced by the family in the adjacent vehicle.
That is not a defence of the creator. It is the hidden mechanism that makes responsible platform enforcement and public reporting essential. TikTok’s January 2026 advertising policy expressly restricts the promotion of dangerous activities, including the inappropriate use of vehicles, copyable behaviour capable of causing physical harm and stunts that might result in injury. The same policy makes room for genuinely educational safety content, which means context matters: exposing dangerous conduct is different from glamorising it.
This is also why merely uploading the clip with laughing emojis, celebratory music or admiring captions can worsen the problem, even when the uploader claims to be “just sharing.” The packaging can transform evidence of wrongdoing into a tutorial for imitation.
A Viral Clip Is Not Worth an Innocent Person’s Life
A creator may imagine that a risky manoeuvre will earn views, followers or a few rupees. The financial fantasy is usually larger than the reward, while the possible cost is catastrophically real. Damaged vehicles, emergency treatment, disability, litigation, licence suspension, employment loss and lifelong guilt cannot be balanced against a temporary rise in engagement.

That insight is commercially useful for legitimate creators, but it also reveals why dangerous spectacle can travel quickly. The responsible lesson is not to manufacture more extreme risk. It is to produce a stronger hook, a clearer story and more valuable content without turning a public road into a circus.
There is no shortage of legitimate material capable of holding attention: vehicle maintenance, defensive-driving demonstrations, helmet education, dashcam analysis, road-design failures and verified public-interest reporting can all create powerful short-form content. Pakistani creators do not need to gamble with Pakistani lives to prove that they understand an algorithm.
