FAQ: What Should a BI Product Team Build First?
Do not begin with a chart inventory.
Begin with one recurring, expensive decision.
Identify who makes it, what uncertainty delays the decision, which business events provide evidence, which definitions must be trusted and what action becomes possible when clarity improves. Only then decide whether the correct interface is a dashboard, narrative, alert, conversational agent or embedded recommendation.
The Dashboard Era Is Not Ending. Its Monopoly on BI Is.
There is a distinction.
Visualisation will survive because humans need to see patterns. Dashboards will survive because operational monitoring requires persistent surfaces. Analysts will survive because businesses remain complicated, incentives remain human and evidence always requires interpretation.
What is dying is the lazy assumption that placing data on a screen constitutes Business Intelligence.
The strongest lesson from my earlier thinking on intelligent narratives and the newer BI product framework is now remarkably consistent: the winning analytics product helps the right person understand what matters next with greater confidence. The course frames BI around reducing doubt, creating trusted understanding and solving a specific decision problem rather than winning a feature-counting contest.
That is where I would start today.
Not with Tableau versus Power BI.
Not with ten dashboard templates.
Not with “we added AI.”
Take one decision your customer repeatedly struggles to make. Measure how long it currently takes them to reach confidence. Find the evidence they manually assemble, the assumptions they repeatedly debate and the point at which somebody inevitably says, “Let me check and come back to you.”
Build there.
