Pakistan’s Women Pioneers Deserve Better Than a Wrong “First”

Two Pakistani pioneers, two fields, and a lesson in getting history right: Yasmeen Lari’s architecture and the women who built Pakistan’s newsrooms.

The work also reaches inside the home. The Heritage Foundation’s Pakistan Chulah programme teaches rural women to build smokeless earthen stoves and won a 2018 World Habitat Award. Its value lies in the combination of a practical design, a skill people can retain and a way for women to take part in building the solution. Calling Lari a pioneer should lead readers to that work, and to the women who make the stoves, rather than stopping at an award photograph. World Habitat

What does a correction take away?

Nothing that was earned. Bucha’s career at Geo remains significant when Kazi’s earlier career is acknowledged. Lari’s buildings and humanitarian work remain significant when an unsupported construction-site anecdote is set aside. Pakistan has enough women who reported, edited, designed, built and taught that one person’s achievement need not be inflated at another’s expense.

Readers can make that standard stick: share the work alongside the names, ask which institution a “first” belongs to, and seek the source when a story sounds perfectly tailored for applause. The question for the next tribute is simple: will it give Pakistan’s pioneers their real history, or only a better caption?

Quick answers

Did Sana Bucha produce Pakistan’s first English-language television news bulletin? The available career accounts identify her with Geo News’s first English-language bulletin. They do not establish the broader national claim. en.wikipedia.org

Who was Shahida Kazi? She began reporting for Dawn in 1966 and later became a news editor at PTV; Arab News identifies her as Pakistan’s first woman correspondent. arabnews.pk
