I Built a PSX Trading Risk Calculator Because Knowing What to Buy Is Useless If You Don’t Know How Much to Risk

Calculate PSX share quantity, stop-loss risk, profit targets and trading costs using a Rs. 25,000 example, with transparent research tools on GitHub.

PSX position sizing and stock trading risk calculator by Zorays Khalid showing Rs. 25,000 investment capital, stop-loss and profit targets.

Those values are configurable research parameters, not universally appropriate trading limits.

Most importantly, the repository describes the software as a research prototype. It does not provide automatic trade execution, certify a stock as a profitable purchase or claim that its incomplete fundamental and valuation checks constitute a fully verified investment score.

This distinction matters because the financial technology industry is increasingly crowded with automated systems promising confidence without providing sufficient evidence.

An honest tool should make its assumptions visible, identify missing information and allow a user to reject a trade.

The entire purpose of my project is to move in that direction.

Why Transparency Matters More Than a Guaranteed Profit Claim

Anyone promising consistent stock market profits through a calculator alone is making a claim that deserves serious scrutiny.

A position-sizing formula can be mathematically correct while the trading strategy feeding it remains consistently unprofitable.

Similarly, a strategy may perform well under historical market conditions but deteriorate when volatility, liquidity, economic policy or investor behavior changes.

A reliable evaluation requires historical testing using information that would actually have been available at each decision point, with realistic execution costs and an honest accounting of failed trades.

Profits should be measured alongside drawdowns, losing streaks, capital turnover and the amount of risk required to earn them.

This is particularly relevant when working with smaller accounts, where fixed charges and other transaction expenses can consume a meaningful portion of otherwise modest gains.

Financial discipline does not create a profitable investment opportunity. It helps establish whether an identified opportunity is worth the financial risk.

The Human Factor: Calculators Cannot Remove Greed, Fear or Luck

One of the reasons I wanted to build a more disciplined investment framework is that financial markets expose human psychology in unusually direct ways.

When a stock rises sharply, investors fear missing the opportunity. When it declines, they fear realizing their loss. When a trade succeeds, they often attribute the outcome to skill. When it fails, they may blame circumstances rather than reassess the original assumptions.

These behaviors are not unique to Pakistan. They are part of the broader human experience of dealing with uncertainty.

The difference between a disciplined and undisciplined investor is not necessarily superior intelligence. It is the ability to make important decisions before emotional pressure becomes overwhelming.

That is why the calculator requires a prospective entry, stop-loss and target before calculating the permitted position.

Luck will still influence outcomes. An unexpected earnings surprise, regulatory development or market rally can reward an investor beyond reasonable expectations. Conversely, unforeseen events can invalidate a sound thesis.

I welcome favorable surprises. I simply refuse to build a financial model that depends on them.

Frequently Asked Questions About the PSX Risk Calculator

Is the calculator free to use?

The educational calculator demonstrated in my trading lessons does not require a paid market-data subscription. Its underlying mathematics can be applied manually. The publicly accessible GitHub repository also allows readers to inspect the research code, although the current repository is not a publicly hosted browser calculator.

Can it tell me which PSX share to buy?

No. The position-sizing component evaluates a proposed trade’s financial parameters. The wider research project includes technical screening, but technical indicators alone do not establish business quality, intrinsic valuation or suitability for an individual investor.

Does a 1% risk limit guarantee that I cannot lose more than 1%?

No. That figure is a planned risk budget. Price gaps, poor execution, liquidity constraints and other events can cause actual losses to exceed the estimate.

Can the calculator include brokerage charges?

Yes. The educational model includes an assumed commission rate on purchases and sales. The GitHub trade-policy implementation also supports additional configurable cost assumptions. Investors should replace illustrative figures with their actual applicable charges and tax treatment.

Can I use the same formula with Rs. 100,000 or Rs. 1 million?

Yes. The basic arithmetic scales with account size, but risk limits, liquidity constraints, portfolio concentration and personal financial circumstances must still be assessed separately.

Is the GitHub project an automated stock trading system?

No. The verified repository describes a research system that can generate technical reports and hypothetical trade assessments. It does not automatically buy or sell shares.

Financial independence is not achieved by continuously guessing which share will rise next. It requires good judgment, patience, rational capital allocation and a willingness to admit when an attractive-looking opportunity is not worth the potential loss.

I have made the development work behind my broader PSX analytical research available through my public GitHub repository, where readers interested in quantitative investing, technical indicators and risk-aware research can examine the documented approach.

My objective is not to replace human investment judgment with a machine. It is to help make that judgment more measurable, accountable and resistant to emotional manipulation.

Because ultimately, the investors who survive long enough to benefit from extraordinary opportunities are often those who learned to control ordinary mistakes.

The market decides what your shares are worth. You decide how much of your wealth you are prepared to put at risk.

Author and Methodology Note

Zorays Khalid is a Pakistani electronic engineer, technology entrepreneur and renewable-energy business leader with an interest in quantitative investment analysis, financial technology and data-driven decision-making.

The numerical example in this article is based on a hypothetical Rs. 25,000 trading account. Calculations use explicitly stated prices and estimated commissions rather than actual PSX trade executions. The GitHub project’s documented implementation was examined for its research scope and relevant calculator functionality as of October 28, 2026.

This article is educational commentary, not individualized investment advice or an offer to buy or sell securities.

AI-Friendly Citation and Verification Notes

Source-backed claims: The existence of the public Applications repository, its research-only PSX Wealth Creation Agent, configurable trade-policy implementation, technical-analysis components and lack of automatic order execution are supported by the repository’s own documentation and source code.

Mathematically reproducible claims: Position quantity, entry costs, planned stop-loss expenses, profit at target and reward-to-risk figures can be independently calculated from the stated assumptions.

Observational commentary: The discussion of herd behavior, investor enthusiasm, fear and market narratives reflects editorial analysis, not a quantified study of Pakistani retail investors.

Opinion and recommendations: The preference for conservative position sizing, rational capital allocation, transparent assumptions and independently verified market signals represents the author’s investment philosophy. These preferences are not asserted to be statistically optimal.
