In my assessment, the Egypt–Argentina match became remembered less for the quality of football than for the debate surrounding officiating.
That alone should concern FIFA.
Regardless of whether every disputed decision can ultimately be justified under the Laws of the Game, the tournament’s governing body should recognise that confidence in officiating is as important as accuracy itself.
Football asks supporters to trust its officials.
That trust must continually be earned—not assumed.
Questions That Remain
- Were all major physical incidents involving Mohamed Salah reviewed according to FIFA protocol?
- Should FIFA publish post-match technical explanations for high-profile officiating controversies?
- Would greater transparency strengthen confidence in elite refereeing?
- Should communication between VAR and on-field officials be released after particularly controversial matches?
These are legitimate questions for football’s governing institutions. They do not presume misconduct; they ask whether the current system provides enough transparency to sustain public trust.
