While the political class argues over who will inherit power, the army has lost a man who chose to step down on schedule – a rarity that should make every Pakistani sit up.
His Service, Not a Myth
Hamid Mir reported that General Abdul Waheed Kakar served as Chief of Army Staff from 12 January 1993 to 12 January 1996, the fifth COAS in Pakistan’s history. Yahya Mukhtar added that Kakar was the only Pashtun ever to hold the post, all his predecessors being Punjabis. This fact is more than a footnote; it shows a time when the army’s senior ranks reflected the country’s ethnic mosaic.
