From Lagaan to Lord’s: Did Pakistan Escape the Empire but Keep Its Cricketing System?

Pakistan cricket’s rise and collapse mirrors decades of political upheaval, institutional control and lost merit—from Imran Khan’s peak to 2026.

Lagaan-inspired illustration of Pakistan cricket confronting England as Pakistan’s Test decline reflects decades of political and institutional instability.

Was Pakistan better under military dictators?

There is no defensible simple correlation. Pakistan rose spectacularly during Zia’s dictatorship but also achieved major successes under civilian governments. The evidence is more consistent with cricketing leadership and institutional continuity being decisive intermediate variables.

Did Imran Khan himself politicise cricket administration as prime minister?

His government certainly exercised substantial influence over cricket structure. Contemporary reporting says the PCB’s six-team provincial model followed his preference, and the 2019 constitution replaced the previous regional/departmental arrangement. The structure was reversed after his government left office.

Is Mohsin Naqvi solely responsible for Pakistan’s decline?

No. That would commit exactly the same analytical error as crediting or blaming one politician for a multi-decade performance curve. England leads the current three-Test series 2–0 after victories by an innings and 103 runs and then 194 runs; Reuters reports Pakistan has won only one of its last eight Test series. The current crisis has also produced another sweeping mid-series overhaul.
