Beyond the momentary terror, the incident imposes an intangible economic burden. Families forced to seek counseling, schools that must reassure anxious pupils, and local businesses that lose footfall when festivals feel unsafe all add up to a hidden public expense that the state does not tally.
The double standard of security rhetoric
India routinely condemns cross‑border terrorism while allowing a senior police officer to treat a military‑grade weapon as a cultural ornament. The hypocrisy is stark. The same media outlets that amplify external threats rarely scrutinise the domestic misuse of firearms by those sworn to protect the public. When a senior officer’s actions become a meme, the outrage is often limited to “social‑media criticism” rather than a substantive inquiry.
This selective outrage betrays a deeper institutional failure: the mechanisms that should hold officials accountable – internal police complaints, state‑level oversight committees, and the judiciary – are either dormant or deliberately sidestepped. The lack of an official response suggests that the chain of command either condones the act as a cultural gesture or is too fearful of political fallout to act decisively.
What accountability should look like
First, an immediate, transparent inquiry must be ordered by the Chhattisgarh Home Department. The investigation should be led by an officer from outside the Rajnandgaon range to avoid conflict of interest. Video evidence, eyewitness testimonies, and the official firearms‑handling SOPs must be examined. Any violation should trigger disciplinary action under the Indian Police Service (Conduct) Rules, ranging from suspension to removal from post.
Second, the police department must revise its protocol for ceremonial events. The Ministry of Home Affairs already mandates that firearms used in public ceremonies be rendered inert or displayed without ammunition. A clear, enforceable policy must be disseminated to every district, with periodic audits to ensure compliance.
