Pakistan has spent decades being told that corruption is too deeply embedded, financial crime is too sophisticated and stolen public property is too entangled in bureaucratic records to recover at scale. Now the National Accountability Bureau is making a claim so enormous that it cannot be treated as an ordinary departmental press release: Rs5.414 trillion in direct and indirect recoveries during the first six months of 2026, including more than one million acres of state land, while the institution simultaneously moves towards an artificial intelligence-powered e-investigation regime.
That is potentially a historic Pakistani achievement. It is also exactly why the figures, valuation methods and technological safeguards must be made visible to the public. Applause without verification would weaken the achievement rather than strengthen it.
The reported numbers do not describe Rs5.41 trillion in currency deposited into the national treasury. The overwhelming share consists of recovered or protected state assets—particularly land—whose monetary value has been estimated by NAB. The distinction matters because a restored acre, a cancelled illegal allotment, a mutated title and cash physically returned to a victim are all meaningful outcomes, but they are not interchangeable accounting events.
What NAB Has Officially Claimed
According to the Government of Pakistan’s Press Information Department, NAB reported direct and indirect recoveries of Rs2.452 trillion during the second quarter of 2026, taking its six-month total to Rs5.414 trillion, which the bureau described as its highest-ever recovery figure for any six-month period.
The bureau said the second-quarter performance was dominated by the retrieval of 1,078,283 acres of state land across Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab and the Islamabad Capital Territory. It also reported returning Rs42.303 billion in money and assets to more than 24,365 people affected by housing and financial fraud.

NAB Sukkur accounted for the largest stated land recovery, working with the Sindh Board of Revenue and provincial forest authorities to reclaim 853,678 acres belonging to the National Highway Authority and the forest and irrigation departments. NAB valued that land at approximately Rs1.01 trillion and said its ownership had been mutated in favour of the provincial government.
NAB Balochistan reported recovering 209,544 acres, including forest areas, parts of Hingol National Park and land associated with the Gwadar Industrial Estate Development Authority, with a stated value of Rs604.64 billion. NAB Karachi reported 11,422 acres valued at Rs467.11 billion; NAB Lahore reported 1,909 acres valued at Rs288.29 billion; Islamabad and Rawalpindi reported 810 acres valued at Rs66.63 billion; while NAB Multan reported 920 acres valued at Rs2.76 billion.
