India calls itself the mother of democracy, yet NEET protests, police force and detentions expose hypocrisy behind its anti-Pakistan propaganda machine.

Were the protests entirely peaceful?

The demonstrations began around peaceful demands and included students, parents and civil-society supporters, but Reuters reported clashes and injuries among both protesters and security personnel. The existence of disorder does not automatically justify every police action, while the presence of documented baton and tear-gas use does not prove that every protester behaved peacefully.

Why are they called the Cockroach Janta Party?

The label emerged from an online satirical response after unemployed young people and activists were compared to cockroaches. Protesters appropriated the insult and transformed it into a symbol of political survival and youth resistance.

Does this single protest prove India is not democratic?

One protest does not independently determine a country’s regime category. The argument rests on a broader pattern involving institutional pressure, shrinking civic space and government treatment of dissent. Freedom House already categorises India as Partly Free, while V-Dem places it in the electoral-autocracy category.

One thing that stood out is the argument that a democracy is ultimately judged by how it responds to peaceful criticism, especially from students. Whether people agree with every conclusion or not, it’s worth discussing how transparent exam processes and open dialogue can strengthen public trust instead of weakening institutions.
