Pakistan’s Elite Families: How Many Children Do Political Leaders, Generals and Business Tycoons Have?

Pakistan’s elite families compared by marriages, children and national fertility—covering the Sharifs, Bhuttos, Mansha, Malik Riaz and other tycoons.

Pakistan’s political, military and business elite families compared by publicly documented numbers of children

Final Verdict

Pakistan’s publicly documented elite families generally have between two and six children.

The combined usable sample averages 3.67 children, almost identical to the country’s current fertility rate of 3.6.

The evidence does not support the sweeping claim that political leaders, generals and tycoons maintain their dominance by having dramatically larger families than ordinary Pakistanis.

Their advantage lies elsewhere.

They can transfer disproportionate wealth, visibility, institutional access and decision-making power to a relatively ordinary number of descendants.

An ordinary household may raise four citizens.

An elite household can raise four directors, ministers, legislators, investors or inheritors.

That—not the number of births—is where family becomes dynasty.
