Pakistan’s 12-Province Debate Is Real. The Viral Maps and GDP Numbers Are Not the Government’s Plan

Pakistan’s 12-province debate is real, but viral 24-province maps and GDP estimates need scrutiny. Here is what official data actually proves.

Pakistan administrative restructuring debate showing proposed new provinces, Bahawalpur, Islamabad and Karachi against Parliament House.

Is the 24-Province, Eight-Region Graphic Official?

There is currently no evidence establishing that particular graphic as an approved Government of Pakistan plan. Its architecture is substantially more detailed than the proposal publicly articulated by Ahsan Iqbal.

Is Bahawalpur Richer Than Islamabad?

The viral table says so, but the conclusion depends entirely on estimates. Using its GDP assumptions alongside official 2023 census populations actually reverses the per-capita comparison, putting Islamabad above Bahawalpur Division. The exercise demonstrates why unsourced subnational GDP estimates should not be confused with official national accounts.

Is Karachi’s Population Officially 25, 30 or 50 Million?

Pakistanis continue to contest Karachi’s census size, but the official 2023 Census figure for Karachi Division is 20,382,881. Larger figures should therefore be explicitly described as estimates or alternative claims rather than official census totals.
